What is Pinda?
A Pinda is a round rice ball made of cooked rice, sesame seeds, barley flour, honey, and ghee. These balls represent the symbolic body of the deceased soul and are offered during rituals to honor and appease ancestors.
Significance of Pinda Daan
- Helps the departed soul transition smoothly to the next life or attain peace.
- Expresses gratitude to ancestors and fulfills their spiritual needs.
- Removes Pitru Dosha, bringing prosperity and good fortune to the family.
- Strengthens the bond between the living and the dead, ensuring ancestral blessings.
How is Pinda Daan Performed?
- Preparation of Pindas – The rice balls are made with ingredients like sesame seeds, barley flour, and ghee.
- Tarpan – Water mixed with sesame seeds is offered while chanting mantras.
- Offering of Pindas – The rice balls are placed on a banana leaf or in flowing water (like a river or sacred pond).
- Feeding Cows, Crows, and Brahmins – It is believed that ancestors accept food when it is offered to these beings.
Where is Pinda Daan Performed?
Though it can be done at home or a temple, certain places are considered highly auspicious for Pinda Daan:
- Gaya (Bihar) – Vishnupad Temple (most sacred for Pinda Daan).
- Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) – On the banks of the Ganges.
